WHY YOU SHOULD WEAR A BIKINI INTO YOUR 60s

New Years Resolutions are upon us.

I don't care if I lose weight. Or if I always remember to empty the lint drawer in the dryer.

What I do care about, however, are the things that my children and friends will remember at my funeral.

Years ago, a client passed away, and the eulogy was given by her two granddaughters.  Unusual, but endearing. The two young ladies shared a list of all the things they loved most about their grandmother.  Her baking. Her stories. Her sense of humor.  But then they said something that I will never forget.  Even to this day, when I think of it, I stop whatever I am doing, and I smile. They said that they loved that their grandmother wore a bikini into her 60s.

How cool is that?

Of course, it was not about the bikini. It was about the fact that their grandmother had chosen to live life fully, and without limitation.  She had spunk, self–confidence, and a zest for life.   This woman had chosen to live with wild abandon, and her granddaughters noticed.  No one asked what their grandmother weighed.  Or if the bikini looked good on her.   That didn't matter.  What mattered was that she wore it.  At all.

Yesterday, my youngest son, Peter asked me about my New Year Resolutions for 2016.  Here's what I told him:

  1. I want to learn to restore vintage pedal cars, and give them to the children on my street.  Maybe on the 4th of July, we'll have a parade.
  2. I want to ice skate more, even when it's freezing cold and my pajamas are calling.

  3. I want to see my granddaughter's first tooth.

  4. I want to always remember to tell my husband he hasn't lost any hair, even though he knows I'm lying.

  5. I want to see my sons laugh, out loud, at silly things that only they understand.

But most of all, I want to embrace the ordinary moments that make life extraordinary. And I promise to do it in a bikini.
