MY SECRET SCHWEDDY BALLS RECIPE (WARNING: ADDICTIVE!)
/All of us have a signature dish. That one meal or tidbit that sets us apart. For my sister (the one who got the rare cooking gene), it's her cheese ravioli. For Duncan, it's his garlic mashed potatoes. Me? There's only one contender: my famous schweddy balls, named after my favorite Saturday Night Live skit. I break them out every Christmas, in honor of Alec Baldwin and Nina Totenberg.
Step aside fruitcake and egg nog ice cream! My luscious chocolate and peanut butter concoctions, with the ever-so-subtle crunch (think Butterfinger goodness), are on the scene.
Each December, the waters (or should I say towering snow piles) part as I walk down the street to deliver my little round nuggets of wonderfulness. I relish each moment as I'm transformed into the neighborhood domestic goddess. Pillars of the community linger on their doorsteps, awaiting my delivery, shouting with glee, "Are those your schweddy balls?" In years past, neighbors have pulled me aside to confess that they actually hide the indulgent morsels from their family members. I've (proudly) created a generation of foodie hoarders, despite my inability to boil water. So much for the Christmas spirit.
The last few years, I've faced a challenge. The little girl across the street, who is also my cherished goddaughter, has insisted on delivering the schweddy balls with me. She calls it our yuletide "special time." I've resigned to the fact that, for at least the next few years, my homemade goodies will be called "Christmas treats," at least within her ear shot.
For years, people have begged me for the recipe. I've always said no. Until now. I think it's time to let go. I no longer want to define myself, even in small (or shallow) part, by something I have that others want. I need to give back; to spread the joy. While I can.
My hope is that, by sharing this coveted recipe (which is, after all, my only claim to culinary worth), I will inspire you to take one small step to promote good cheer this holiday season. Life is too short to ration our gifts. Ultimately, we're all in this together. So, go ahead and indulge in the schweddy balls, and embrace the ordinary moments that make life extraordinary. And leave the rich, chocolatey smile on your face until at least New Years.
